Chatham Co. Superior Court of Law - Petition of Jordan G. Stokes & Sylvanus Stokes, two of the heirs of Thos. Stokes, late of Chatham Co.  Thos. Stokes died in 1811, intestate, he was the father of the petitioners, when he died he left them and William Brittle Stokes, his three children surviving him.  William B. Stokes has since died, also intestate, and leaving one child Hannah Stokes.  She is an infant of tender years, and due in right to her dec'd father's portion.  She is without a guardian.  Thomas Stokes owned land in Chatham, Moore, Cumberland, Franklin & Orange Counties - The acreage & location of the land goes on for 5 pages, and is quite substantial.  He owned land on Lick Creek, Shaddon Creek, New Hope Creek, Bear Creek, S. Side of Deep River, Cape Fear River, Haw River, & much more.  A few of the people his land adjoined were John Ramsey, John Minter, Jesse Daniel, Joseph Brantley, the Parhams, Cottens and Archibald Brown - among those he obtained his land from were:  Joseph Brantley, Joseph Brantley Junr., Abner Hill, William Avent, John Ramse, and more!  - The final settlement was registered March 1815

 “…I got word to come and bring two or three men with me. I went then.  Well, that night I had the deed of my father’s home place made over to me. Baxter Johnson and Abner Johnson signed by putting down heir names.”

             “My father had me to go to Pittsboro courthouse and have my deed recorded. I did and it was from then my father told some neighbors that he was not uneasy, that he would ever feel it was not his home, nor did I ever say one time “my home” until after my father was dead.”

Cottens corner, then east to a pine on the Gulf road then south to the first station, containing 120 acres more or less. - signed John L. Williams & Lucy J. Williams - wit: W. C. McMackin - deed is marked "this mortgage has been this day paid in full & is hereby canceled this April 26th 1888" (could be 1885?) - followed by statement of W.D. Haywood, JP of Wake Co., NC who states that John L. Williams & Lucy J. Williams his wife did personally appear before him and acknowledge the execution of this deed of mortgage, and that Lucy was examined separated and apart from her said husband. 18 Nov 1884 - recorded in Chatham Co., NC at 11 o'clock a.m. 20 (? Williams has reserved for herself 20 acres of the above land laying on the south side of the place, and including the little house near the Spring South of the dwelling. signed Lucy J.
